Moira

Mother of the Maw.

Some monsters are born.

Others choose.

Moira chose.

She was Vu’s biological mother, though history often hesitates to grant her the title. Motherhood implies protection. Moira offered only possession.

Long before kingdoms knew Vu’s name, before relics awakened and sovereigns rose, Moira had already decided what her daughter was worth.

A price.

As a devoted cult leader aligned with the Maw, Moira viewed human life as a resource rather than a responsibility. Family, loyalty, love, and innocence were obstacles to be overcome in pursuit of power. She preached devotion while consuming those entrusted to her care.

Among her greatest crimes was the sale of her own daughter to the Chapel.

Vu was not surrendered out of desperation.

She was traded.

Given to an institution that would implant a broken relic gem into her chest and shape her childhood through pain, isolation, and abuse.

And still, that was not enough.

Throughout Vu’s early life, Moira repeatedly sought her death when control proved impossible. Assassins, cultists, rituals, and sacrifices followed wherever opportunity allowed. Each failure only deepened her obsession.

To Moira, Vu was never a child.

She was a vessel.

A key.

A door that had not yet opened.

As her influence within the Maw expanded, Moira’s atrocities escalated. Entire communities disappeared into sacrificial rites. Followers vanished without explanation. Even her own children were offered to the hunger she worshipped.

The Maw demanded.

Moira obeyed.

In the end, she sacrificed everything except the one thing that mattered most:

Her belief that she was right.

Her final ambition was to reclaim Vu completely and offer her to the Maw as the ultimate vessel—a living bridge between worlds, capable of feeding an endless hunger.

Instead, she faced judgment.

Not from gods.

Not from kings.

From the daughter she had abandoned.

When the confrontation finally came, Vu was given what countless victims never receive:

The opportunity to look her abuser in the eye.

The opportunity to choose.

And the opportunity to end it.

Moira was judged by Vu herself.

She died knowing the daughter she sought to own had become something she could never control.

Something she could never understand.

For Vu, Moira’s death was not closure.

Some wounds do not close.

But it was an ending.

The moment the last illusion was stripped away.

The moment Vu stopped hoping there had ever been a mother beneath the monster.

Among survivors of the Chapel and the Maw, a saying emerged afterward:

“The Chapel taught Vu suffering.”

“Moira taught her betrayal.”

“The world learned which lesson survived.”

Moira sought to feed the Maw.

Instead, she became one more thing it consumed.

And with her death, Vu’s resolve hardened into certainty:

The Chapel would end.

No matter what remained standing afterward.
