Volume II: The Western Lands

Page

☾ Archivist’s Foreword — The Western Lands

(Excerpt from the private letters of Lysander of Sutra, transcribed into the Codex at the request of Queen Umbra herself.)

“The Western Lands are not ruled by stone or sword,
but by the memory of promises kept beneath moonlight.
Its kings are poets, its queens—storms in human form.

Here, devotion is a weapon as sharp as any forged blade.
To walk these halls is to feel watched by both history and love—
each demanding their due.”

— Lysander of Sutra, Sixth Revision, Year of the Waning Wolf

“Realm of Moon and Grove”

“Here the moon keeps its lovers and its liars,
and every shadow remembers its source.”
— Fragment from the Songs of the Grove

☾ PALACE OF THE MOON / WESTERN PALACE ☾

Type: Royal Seat and Sacred Bastion
Region: Western Lands

Mythic Chronicle:

“It is said the Palace was born of a moonbeam caught in mortal hands. The goddess kissed the stone, and it learned to glow. Those who walk its halls walk within her breath.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Perched atop the Cliffs of Moonlight, surrounded by dense lunar forests. The palace gleams white by day, silver by night; its walls hum faintly when storms approach.
Culture & People: The court of Daichi values restraint and poetry; warriors speak in riddles, priests in silence. The palace doubles as temple, fortress, and school of the Moon Discipline.
Faith & Magic: Devotion to Ife’s lunar aspect. The moonfire wells at the central altar—an ever-burning flame said to be her promise of return.
Trade & Economy: Produces moonstone carvings, silver ink, and ceremonial armor inlaid with light crystal.
Political & Historical Notes: Seat of Daichi’s rule; site of the Rite of Aetherium Alignment with Umbra.
Notable Lore:

“The Moon Palace remembers every promise ever made within its walls—and collects the unkept ones beneath its floor.”
Marginalia (Lysander):
The echoing hum of the stones seems deliberate, as though the palace itself disapproves of lies.

☾ THE SANCTUM OF BONDING ☾ ☾

Type: Sacred Chamber / Ritual Hall
Region: West Wing, Palace of the Moon

Mythic Chronicle:

“Here, love is not sworn—it is forged.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Structure & Setting: A private wing within the Palace, draped in silk veils and inscribed with lunar runes that glow when two soulbound beings enter. The chamber itself hums in resonance with shared heartbeats.
Faith & Magic: The Sanctum is where the Rite of Bonding—a ritual of eternal union—is completed. The act sanctifies more than love; it binds power, fate, and memory across lifetimes.
Culture & Lore: Few outside the royal line have ever witnessed the Sanctum’s light. It is said the walls bloom with pale flowers only once: when the bond is complete.
Notable Lore:

“The moon bears witness only once—and forever.”

The very air feels heavier there, as if weighed by memory. I lingered too long, and dreamt of vows not mine to keep.

☾VILLAGE OF THE MOON ☾

Type: Loyal Settlement
Region: Western Lands

Mythic Chronicle:

“When the goddess wept over the wounded king, her tears fell here, and a village grew from them.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Nestled below the palace cliffs, bathed in silvery mist. Lanterns light the cobbled paths at dusk.
Culture & People: Fiercely loyal to Umbra—calling her The Silent Moon. Their inns double as archives of gossip.
Faith & Magic: Small shrines line every corner; moonwater is poured over doorsteps to ward off ill spirits.
Trade & Economy: Known for honeyed rice, silk embroidery, and carved moonstone charms.
Notable Lore:

“She’s one of us,” they say. “Even the Moon needs a home.”

The Moonsong Inn serves a drink called ‘Eclipse.’ One cup and you see stars, two and you confess to them.

☾ VILLAGE BELOW THE CLIFFS OF MOONLIGHT ☾

Type: Market Town
Region: Western Coast

Mythic Chronicle:

“The shadow of greatness breeds both loyalty and envy.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Built into caverns at the base of the cliffs. Torches flicker along winding alleys.
Culture & People: Tradesmen, smugglers, and secret-keepers. Known for their black-market mooncrystal trade.
Faith & Magic: Twisted devotion to the Moon—less prayer, more bargaining.
Political & Historical Notes: Site of Usha’s betrayal and the theft of royal relics.
Notable Lore:

“The cliffs drink truth; the caves only echo it.”

The cliff paths are perilous. Yet the smugglers navigate them drunk. I envy their faith—or their livers.

☾ THE WESTERN CAPITAL ☾

Type: Political and Diplomatic Hub
Region: Western Realm

Mythic Chronicle:

“Built not by faith, but by compromise. The moon sees all, even politics.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Inland from the coast, at the meeting of four rivers. Marble courts and paper lantern towers.
Culture & People: Aristocrats, diplomats, and artisans. Speech here is an art of veiled threats.
Faith & Magic: Houses the Council of Reflected Light, a secular-lunar order maintaining balance between faith and governance.
Trade & Economy: Known for calligraphy, glasswork, and enchanted textiles.
Notable Lore:

“In the capital, even silence has a price.”

Records suggest they invented taxation before prayer. Efficient, if soulless.

☾ RUINBLOOM — THE BLOOM BARRIER ☾

Type: Living Magical Wall
Region: Western Frontier

Mythic Chronicle:

“When Umbra bled upon the frontier, the roses drank her power. They bloom still, guarding what she could not keep.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Stretch of living thorn and rose, running leagues across the western border. Thorns shimmer crimson by moonlight.
Faith & Magic: Considered an extension of Umbra’s soul—responsive to her lineage’s will.
Notable Lore:

“To touch the Bloom is to dream her dreams.”

Petal samples resist decay. I suspect divine sap, though I am told ‘love’ is the true preservative.

☾VERDANT GROVE ☾☾

Type: Relic Site
Region: Western Lands

Mythic Chronicle:

“Where they bound the Leviathan and sealed their fates, the ground still hums with heartbeat and hymn.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Vast canopy forest veined with silver roots.
Faith & Magic: Site of Daichi and Umbra’s bond ritual. Magic lingers—any who enter feel both awe and dread.
Notable Lore:

“The Grove does not forget; it only forgives slowly.”

Compass needles spin here. As do hearts, I am told.

☾ GROVE OF WHISPERS ☾

Type: Sacred Grove
Region: Western Lands

Mythic Chronicle:

“Every word ever left unsaid gathers here to become wind.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Smaller sister grove near Verdant Grove; filled with silverleaf trees that murmur in calm air.
Faith & Magic: Site of the Rite of Aetherium Alignment. Trees store echoes of divine vows.
Notable Lore:

“Those who lie here cannot breathe.”

I tested the rumor. A half-truth—though I admit, the air thickened at my second lie.

☾ DARKWOOD HALL ☾

Type: Palace Wing
Region: Western Palace

Mythic Chronicle:

“Here, the Silent Moon read the stars until they wept.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: A secluded wing lined with ink-black marble and moonlight windows.
Faith & Magic: Said to amplify written spells. Used by Umbra for solitude and study.
Notable Lore:

“The pages turn themselves when she is remembered.”

I found one such page. It turned only once—then caught fire.

☾ THE MOUNTAIN FORGE ☾

Type: Hidden Smithy / Ancestral Chamber
Region: Beneath the Palace of the Moon

Mythic Chronicle:

“In the mountain’s heart, the kings of the Moon shaped their vows in metal and fire. Each heir forged his first blade here—and his last truth.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Structure & Access: Hidden chamber beneath the Palace of the Moon, accessible only by a sealed stair known to the royal bloodline. For generations, it passed from father to son—until Daichi broke tradition and shared it with Umbra.
Faith & Magic: The forge burns with lunar flame—blue-white, eternal. It is said the metal cooled in that light remembers the hand that struck it.
Culture & Lore: Weapons forged here are bound to their wielder’s life force. The last known item shaped within was the blade Jinseiga, created by Jiro under Daichi’s watch.
Notable Lore:

“The forge tempers the soul before the steel.”

Heat without smoke. Fire without source. I left a ring on the anvil; it did not melt—it sang.

☾ THE GRAND TEMPLE OF MOONSONG ☾

Type: Ceremonial Temple / Coronation Site
Region: City of Moonsong, Western Lands

Mythic Chronicle:

“When the goddess crowned her mortal heir, the moon shone not above but beneath her feet.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: The Grand Temple sits at the city’s highest rise, beneath the open sky, its floor made of glass-clear marble that reflects the moon perfectly.
Faith & Magic: Serves as both cathedral and a coronation ground. The Crown of Moonsong—a relic said to adjust its light to the wearer’s soul—was placed upon Umbra’s head here, signifying her ascension as Queen of the Western Lands.
Culture & Lore: Priests of Moonsong sing hymns that can alter the weather. The coronation rites are remembered by the air itself; echoes of the choir can be heard on windless nights.
Notable Lore:

“When Umbra knelt, even the stars bowed lower.”

The glass underfoot showed no reflection that day—perhaps the heavens refused to look upon their equal.

☾ THE LIBRARY OF ASHINORI ☾

Type: Living Archive of Prophecy
Region: Mountain Range of the Western Lands

Mythic Chronicle:

“When the first moon fell silent, it left behind a library to speak in its stead. There, prophecy writes itself in silver ink, as if the mountain remembers what has not yet occurred.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Hidden within a high western peak, accessible only during eclipses when the mountain’s inner stair appears. Shelves are carved directly from the stone, and the walls glimmer faintly as if veins of silver run through the rock.
Faith & Magic: The Library’s scrolls write and erase themselves; words fade when futures change. Priests of Ashinori act as witnesses rather than authors, recording what the mountain reveals.
Culture & Lore: Only those of Moon-blood may safely read from its archives; others find the letters rearranging themselves into riddles.
Notable Lore:

“Prophecy does not reveal—it remembers too soon.”
(Lysander):
A text began to write my name as I watched. I closed the book. It stopped. I did not open it again.

☾ GARDEN OF STONE AND GHOSTS ☾

Type: Ancient Palace Garden
Region: Western Palace Grounds

Mythic Chronicle:

“The gods walked here once—and left themselves behind.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Moss-covered statues in endless rows; the air hums faintly like a low chant.
Faith & Magic: A memorial garden where old spirits reside. Used for meditation and mourning.
Notable Lore:

“The statues sometimes weep when the moon is full.”

I heard them whisper names not in any living tongue. I wrote them down. They vanished by morning.

☾ CLIFFS OF MOONLIGHT ☾

Type: Natural Feature
Region: Western Coast

Mythic Chronicle:

“The cliffs were carved by the first moonbeam that touched the earth.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: White cliffs overlooking the Western Sea. Reflect moonlight bright enough to blind at full moon.
Faith & Magic: Pilgrims climb to catch ‘moon tears’—droplets of dew that gather only once per season.
Notable Lore:

“Climbers swear they hear her singing in the wind.”

I climbed once. Only heard my knees protest.

☾ RIVERBEND & THE WHISPERING EARTH ☾

Type: Border River / Healing Site
Region: Western Boundary

Mythic Chronicle:

“Where she bled, the river learned mercy.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Curving river lined with pale reeds and whispering stones.
Faith & Magic: Place of healing; used by Daichi and Shinzaburō to recover Umbra after the Outwilds battle.
Notable Lore:

“The water hums like a lullaby when touched by moonborn.”

The hum recorded faintly on crystal. Resonance consistent with lunar frequency.

☾ BAMBOO GROVE & THE HUT BEYOND THE RIVERBEND ☾

Type: Sanctuary / Natural Grove
Region: Western Outskirts

Mythic Chronicle:

“The wind through bamboo carries the first language ever spoken.”

Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Dense bamboo grove along the river’s curve. The hut rests atop roots, surrounded by spirit lamps.
Faith & Magic: A site of communion between mortal and land.
Notable Lore:

“If you dream beneath its roof, the land dreams with you.”

Spent one night there. Dreamt I was soil. Woke feeling oddly refreshed.
