VOLUME I: THE SOUTHERN LANDS
“Realm of Salt and Shadow”
“Southward lies memory drowned in its own reflection.
Yet even beneath ruin, something holy still breathes.”
— Inscription on the southern gate of Sehara
✦ SAPHIRA — THE CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH ✦
Type: Capital City and Throne of the Sea
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“When the world was still half-dream, the Serpent God shed a scale that became the city of Saphira. Its towers rose from the sea foam, glimmering with the blood of dawn. The first queen bathed in those waters and spoke the Law of Salt: ‘All things return to the tide.’”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Coral-stone architecture stands against a restless sea. Saphira’s cliffs shimmer with embedded minerals, and tides beat against the lower gates like a heartbeat of the earth itself.
Culture & People: A people of ceremony and survival. They salt their bread with sea-brine and burn incense of kelp and citrus. Festivals last three nights and always end with lanterns released into the waves.
Faith & Magic: Worship centers on water’s duality—giver and taker. Magic manifests in tidal chants and the art of salt-binding, where sea crystals trap minor spirits.
Trade & Economy: Exports: coral glass, pearls, serpent dyes. Imports: desert spice and moonwine.
Political & Historical Notes: Once ruled by the Snake Lord Souta; reclaimed by the Faith of Kami after the Fall of Amrrire.
Notable Lore:
“It is said the tides remember the taste of blood. When the sea turns crimson, Saphira prepares for change.”
(Archivist Lysander):
A Saphiran elder once told me that their salt bowls never dry. I suspect condensation, not divinity—but one hesitates to test gods with reason.
✦ SEHARA — PORT OF SALT AND MEMORY ✦
Type: Trade Town
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“Where the desert first kissed the sea, the goddess wept. Her tears fell as salt, and men built homes upon them.”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Sandy coast town built atop ancient reefs. The air tastes of both spice and sorrow.
Culture & People: Fisher-folk and traders; famed for their “Tide Markets” held at dusk when the water laps between stalls.
Faith & Magic: They revere Ife as the Keeper of Nets—protector of those who cast their lives into uncertain waters.
Trade & Economy: Exports dried fish, perfume oil, and salt crystals shaped like prayers.
Political & Historical Notes: Hosts a rotating council of merchants; frequently raided during the southern wars.
Notable Lore:
“Every child of Sehara learns to swim before they walk.”
I purchased one of their salt-crystals. It dissolved the moment I named it. I am still uncertain whether this was science or insult.
✦ AMRRĪRE — THE DROWNED COLISEUM ✦
Type: Ruined Undersea City
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“Amrrire was forged on blood and thunder. There the gods wagered on mortal pain, and the sea learned cruelty.”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Now lies beneath thirty fathoms; coral growths devour the arena stones. Divers report faint sounds of applause below.
Culture & People: Once a city of arenas, serpents, and spectacle.
Faith & Magic: Blood rituals tied to tide cycles; now forbidden.
Trade & Economy: Once the hub of southern commerce; now a graveyard of treasure.
Political & Historical Notes: Destroyed during Umbra’s uprising; fragments of serpent sigils still surface in coastal ruins.
Notable Lore:
“Some claim the Leviathan sleeps beneath Amrrire, dreaming the world anew.”
Divers return with bones too large to be human. Whether Leviathan or myth, I cannot say.
✦ PALACE OF THE SEA — SEAT OF THE SNAKE LORD ✦
Type: Fortress Palace
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“The Palace was carved from coral and curse. It listened only to its master’s breath.”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: A cliffside fortress overlooking black waters. The lower halls merge into natural sea caves.
Culture & People: Once home to Souta’s serpent clans. Now abandoned except for priests who guard its archives.
Faith & Magic: The site hums with old curse energy; forbidden to enter without ritual cleansing.
Trade & Economy: Former hub of arena trade; none remain.
Political & Historical Notes: Post-war, converted into a shrine-library by the Faith of Ife.
Notable Lore:
“It is said the stones whisper when the tide is high, naming each soul that died within.”
Even stone holds memory—though not all memories deserve recalling.
✦ THE FORBIDDEN CAVERN ✦
Type: Ritual Site
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“Beneath the serpent’s throne lies a door that opens only in hunger.”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Jagged fissure within volcanic rock near Sehara; walls etched with ancient blood sigils.
Faith & Magic: Used by Souta to summon the Devouring Beast; sealed by Umbra’s power during her uprising.
Notable Lore:
“The echo still answers when called.”
Sealed or sleeping? The Faith insists the latter is impossible. I remain unconvinced.
✦ SOUTHERN SHRINE OF THE VESPERS ✦
Type: Shrine and Trial Site
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“Here minds were rewritten by the voice of gods; few returned whole.”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Limestone cliffs crowned by obsidian domes; wind howls like prayer.
Faith & Magic: Hosts the Trial of Spirit Alignment—a rite to harmonize soul and body.
Political & Historical Notes: Declared sacred-neutral after the fall of Souta.
Notable Lore:
“The wind here speaks your name backward.”
Visited once. Could not sleep for days after. The cliffs murmur even when still.
✦ SPIRIT ROADS OF THE SOUTH ✦
Type: Magical Phenomenon / Network
Region: Southern Lands
Mythic Chronicle:
“Silver lines unseen, threads of divine blood linking what was broken.”
Field Scholar’s Record:
Geography & Terrain: Energy conduits visible under moonlight; follow ancient trade routes between Saphira, Sehara, and Nian.
Faith & Magic: Believed to be remnants of the goddess’s veins; travelers claim walking them brings visions.
Notable Lore:
“Every road remembers where it once led.”
Measured one with magnetic tools. No readings. Yet my compass spun for hours after.
