Dai Mercer has the kind of face that makes a liar reconsider the story forming on their tongue.
At thirty-two, she is a thin, carefully composed woman with short black hair shaped neatly around her face. She dresses simply, favoring dark tailored slacks and cream sweaters—clothing chosen for practicality rather than attention. Nothing about Dai is careless. Not her appearance. Not her home. Certainly not the questions she asks.
Her blue eyes are her most striking feature. Clear, sharp, and unnervingly patient, they remain fixed on a person long after most would politely look away. Dai does not interrupt a lie. She allows it to finish, studies the silence that follows, and decides what the speaker hoped to hide.
She lives in a worn brownstone at 55th Street and High, wedged between a pawnshop and a market protected by metal bars. The cracked steps, vandalized mailboxes, and damaged entrance panel discourage visitors. Dai considers that useful. Her apartment is modest but meticulously kept, offering a startling pocket of order within Nygen Heights.
Dai is neither warm nor cruel. She possesses a disciplined compassion stripped of sentimentality. She will give someone food, clean clothes, a locked door, and a safe place to sleep—but she will not insult them with false promises. She understands that survival sometimes requires silence, disappearance, and the courage to leave before dawn.
That understanding is what makes her valuable to Femi.
When Femi needs somewhere to hide from Mira Dell, Dai does not demand a confession before opening her door. She recognizes hunted behavior: the careful glances, the shallow breathing, the instinctive awareness of every exit. Dai gives Femi space without becoming indifferent. She watches the street, listens for unfamiliar footsteps on the stairs, and notices every vehicle that passes the building twice.
She never mistakes Femi’s silence for ignorance or helplessness. Dai speaks directly to her, waits for her signed answers, and respects whatever Femi is not ready to reveal. Their trust is quiet, built through practical gestures rather than declarations.
Dai’s composure can make her seem cold. In truth, she feels deeply but refuses to allow emotion to make decisions for her. She has learned that panic wastes time, anger reveals vulnerabilities, and affection can place a target on someone’s back. Her care therefore appears as preparation: an extra key, money hidden in a coat pocket, a packed bag near the door, and three possible escape routes mapped before anyone thinks they will be needed.
Personality
Controlled, intelligent, suspicious, perceptive, and quietly compassionate. Dai possesses a dry wit that emerges most often when circumstances have become particularly unpleasant.

Relationship with Femi
Dai provides Femi with refuge without demanding ownership of her story. She becomes an older-sister figure of a harder variety—not openly affectionate, but reliable when reliability matters most. Dai does not promise that everything will be fine.
She promises that if danger reaches the door, Femi will not face it alone.
Defining quality
Dai Mercer does not expose lies by raising her voice.
She simply looks at them until they collapse.
