Harlon

Harlon does not need to own Helix to know when someone has entered it with the wrong intentions.

Harlon is a longtime Wolfwater biker, Helix regular, and one of the men Malone trusts to help maintain order when the clubhouse becomes too crowded for one pair of eyes. He is not an official guard. Helix does not advertise that it needs them. Harlon simply knows where to stand, which strangers to watch, and when a conversation near the service window requires his presence.

Gruff, patient, and difficult to impress, Harlon carries himself like a man who has survived enough trouble to recognize it before it introduces itself. He rarely interferes with Malone’s decisions, but he quietly reinforces them. When someone is barred from Helix, Harlon remembers. When a frightened woman needs an escort home, he finds his keys without making her explain. When Daemon becomes unnaturally still, Harlon moves innocent people out of the way.

Basic Information

  • Full Name: Harlon
  • Alias: None
  • Age: Mid-forties
  • Height: 5’11”
  • Weight: Approximately 190 lbs
  • Eyes: Brown
  • Hair: Dark brown threaded with gray
  • Skin Tone: Pale
  • Occupation: Mechanic and part-time security at Helix
  • Affiliation: Wolfwater and Helix
  • Residence: Wolfwater
  • Defining Trait: Vigilance disguised as indifference

Personality

Harlon is reserved, practical, loyal, and quietly protective. He has little patience for dramatics and even less for people who mistake Helix’s hospitality for permission to cause trouble.

  • Observant: Harlon pays attention to exits, unfamiliar vehicles, concealed hands, and sudden changes in a room’s noise.
  • Dependable: He does not make promises casually. Once he gives his word, inconvenience and danger become irrelevant.
  • Blunt: Harlon prefers direct language and has no talent—or desire—for making an unpleasant truth sound gentle.
  • Patient: He is willing to watch a suspicious person for hours before deciding whether intervention is necessary.
  • Protective: His care is practical rather than sentimental. He walks people home, repairs locks, checks vehicles, and stands nearby when someone is frightened.
  • Territorial: Helix is not merely a bar to him. It is one of the few places in Wolfwater where abandoned people can become part of something. He does not tolerate threats beneath its roof.
  • Dryly humorous: Harlon’s jokes arrive without a change in expression, leaving strangers uncertain whether they have been insulted.
  • Discreet: He hears a great deal inside Helix and repeats very little. In Wolfwater, that restraint is more valuable than charm.
  • Unimpressed by reputation: Harlon respects what Daemon can do, but he does not worship the Devil. Fear may keep strangers obedient; loyalty allows Harlon to speak honestly.
  • Slow to trust: Outsiders are observed before they are welcomed. Harlon believes a person’s behavior when no reward is offered reveals more than any introduction.

Background

  • Origins: Harlon was raised in Wolfwater during the years when the district’s factories were closing and entire families were discovering how quickly Ravenside could forget them.
  • Work: He learned mechanical repair because broken machines were easier to understand than desperate people. Engines responded to patience, attention, and the correct tools.
  • Wolfwater life: Harlon worked wherever employment could be found—warehouses, garages, loading yards, and repair shops. Several jobs disappeared when the businesses closed. He remained.
  • Helix: He became a regular at Helix long before Femi arrived. Over time, his familiarity with the building, its customers, and Wolfwater’s troublemakers made him part of the clubhouse’s unofficial security.
  • Malone’s trust: Malone relies upon Harlon to notice problems without escalating them unnecessarily. If Harlon says a stranger has been watching the rear entrance, Malone listens.
  • Daemon’s return: Harlon knew enough about Daemon’s reputation to keep his distance, but he judged him by what he did inside Helix. Daemon never preyed upon the weak, never started violence for spectacle, and never failed to finish danger once it began.
  • Femi: Harlon initially regarded Femi as another frightened young person Malone had pulled from Wolfwater’s teeth. Her endurance, work ethic, and quiet refusal to surrender earned his respect.
  • Place in Helix: Harlon becomes one of the steady figures in Femi’s new life—not intimate enough to demand her secrets, but dependable enough that she knows where he will stand when trouble enters.

Appearance & Notable Features

  • Harlon has a broad, work-hardened build shaped by years of lifting engines, moving equipment, and handling men who refuse to leave peacefully.
  • His dark-brown hair is cut short and threaded with gray at the temples.
  • Years outdoors have weathered his tan skin and deepened the lines around his eyes.
  • His brown eyes are steady and habitually narrowed, as though every room contains something requiring closer inspection.
  • A faded scar crosses the knuckles of his right hand.
  • His hands are usually marked by grease, even after washing.
  • He keeps a trimmed beard that becomes rougher during long weeks at the garage.
  • Harlon moves without hurry. The lack of urgency often makes his approach more intimidating.
  • He favors positions near walls, exits, or the service window, where he can observe Helix without obstructing its staff.

Attire

  • Casual Attire: Harlon wears faded black jeans, heavy work boots, plain T-shirts, and a worn canvas or leather vest. His clothes frequently carry traces of motor oil, metal dust, and cigarette smoke. A heavy key ring hangs from one belt loop, containing keys to vehicles, tool cabinets, and Helix doors he has never officially admitted Malone entrusted to him.
  • At Work: In the garage, he wears dark coveralls with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, steel-toed boots, and protective glasses pushed onto his head when not in use.
  • At Helix: He keeps his clothing simple and his hands free. His jacket is usually hung close enough to retrieve quickly, and he never sits where he cannot see the entrance.

Relationships

  • Malone
    • Malone is Harlon’s friend, employer when necessary, and one of the few men whose judgment he accepts without demanding an immediate explanation.
    • Their loyalty was built through years of shared trouble rather than declarations. Harlon helps protect Helix because he believes in what Malone has allowed it to become.
    • He will challenge Malone privately when he believes emotion is influencing a dangerous decision, but he never undermines him in front of strangers.
  • Femi
    • Harlon respects Femi’s silence and never demands that she communicate faster for his convenience.
    • He learns her common gestures and watches the direction of her gaze when she cannot easily warn someone about a problem.
    • His protection is deliberately unobtrusive. He does not hover over her. He places himself between her and danger while pretending he intended to stand there all along.
    • Femi occasionally leaves food near his usual place without explanation. Harlon eats it without thanking her aloud, then repairs something she mentioned weeks earlier.
  • Daemon Pallid
    • Harlon respects Daemon’s competence and understands that his stillness often signals more danger than another man’s shouting.
    • He does not attempt to control the Devil. When Daemon’s attention fixes upon a threat, Harlon clears bystanders and ensures no one foolishly interferes.
    • Their relationship contains little conversation but considerable trust. Daemon knows Harlon will watch Femi if he must leave Helix unexpectedly.
    • Harlon is willing to tell Daemon when protectiveness has begun resembling control—a privilege few men possess and fewer would survive abusing.
  • Mary
    • Harlon watches Mary endure rude customers with a mixture of amusement and respect.
    • She knows precisely how he takes his coffee and routinely makes it stronger when he has worked through the night.
    • They bicker over closing duties, missing glasses, and his habit of tracking garage dirt across her clean floor.
    • Beneath the arguments is an old, comfortable affection neither feels obligated to define.
  • Cutter
    • Cutter and Harlon share Wolfwater’s long memory. They disagree about details, blame one another for forgotten debts, and tell contradictory versions of the same stories.
    • When Helix is threatened, the disagreements disappear. Both men understand that family is measured by who remains when the doors must be defended.

Character Role

Harlon represents the quiet structure supporting Helix.

He is not its owner, its most dangerous man, or the center of its found family. He is one of the reasons that family survives. His presence shows that protection in Wolfwater does not always arrive with a declaration.

Sometimes it is simply a watchful man near the service window, already standing before anyone realizes trouble has entered.
