Malone

Malone
He offered her a room and pretended not to notice when it became a home.
Malone is a weathered man with a guarded heart, a sharp tongue, and an instinct to protect that often disguises itself as irritation. As the owner and bartender of Helix, he presides over the clubhouse with the authority of someone who has spent years among dangerous people and survived by understanding exactly when to intervene.
He is gruff, practical, stubborn, and rarely sentimental in public. Yet beneath the roughness lies an extraordinary capacity for care. When Malone discovered eighteen-year-old Femi searching for food behind Helix, he did not interrogate her, demand gratitude, or require her to explain what had happened. He fed her. Then he gave her a room. When she remained, he allowed her to decide what place she would occupy in his life.
Somewhere between shared breakfasts, late nights behind the bar, and his relentless concern for her safety, Malone became her father.
Neither of them needed to say it aloud.

Malone expresses affection through practical acts. He provides food, shelter, employment, protection, and the occasional unwanted opinion. He remembers what people need, leaves gifts outside closed doors, and quietly alters his routines to accommodate those under his roof. He may complain throughout the entire process, but the care itself never wavers.
His humor is dry and frequently aimed at Daemon, whose terrifying reputation does nothing to discourage Malone from provoking him. Their exchanges reveal a long familiarity built from old history, mutual respect, and the certainty that neither man is easily intimidated.

Background
Malone’s past is tied to Ravenside’s biker culture, its criminal underworld, and the dangerous loyalties that shaped Wolfwater. He has known violence closely enough to recognize it before it announces itself, but age and experience have made him more interested in maintaining his territory than conquering anyone else’s.
Helix is the life he built from those years.
Part clubhouse, part bar, and part sanctuary, Helix attracts bikers, laborers, drifters, and people who know better than to ask too many questions. Malone rules it with a firm hand. Fighting is expected within limits. Threatening those under his protection is not.
His history with Iris, Femi’s mother, is one of the deepest wounds he carries. Malone loved her, though their lives ultimately moved in different directions. Years before her murder, Iris came to him asking about a silver serpent. He dismissed the symbol as jewelry, never realizing it belonged to the criminal network closing around her family.
That failure remains with him.
When Malone later found Femi behind Helix, starving and homeless after aging out of foster care, he did not initially recognize the full truth of who she was. He saw only a frightened young woman who needed food and somewhere safe to sleep. He gave her both.
Once he discovered that she was Iris’s surviving daughter, his care became inseparable from regret. Malone could not protect Iris, but he refuses to abandon the child she left behind. However, Femi is never merely a debt he believes he owes the dead. His love for her becomes real, immediate, and entirely her own.
He does not keep her because she belonged to Iris.
He keeps the door open because Femi belongs at Helix.
Appearance & Notable Features
Malone has the rugged, worn appearance of a man shaped by motorcycles, bar fights, sleepless nights, and years spent behind a whiskey-stained counter. His graying hair and old scars suggest a life he rarely discusses. He is no longer the young biker shown in photographs beside Iris and Daemon, but age has diminished very little of his authority.
Behind the bar, Malone appears completely at home. He can pour drinks, monitor an argument across the room, recognize a concealed weapon, and notice that Femi has missed a meal without seeming to look directly at any of it.
His face is expressive despite his efforts to remain unreadable. Amusement appears as a crooked grin. Concern tightens his mouth. Genuine emotion often causes him to clear his throat, look away, or suddenly become offended by someone else’s face.
Femi can read him easily.
Daemon can too, though Malone would prefer that neither man discuss it.
Attire
- Usual Attire: Malone favors practical clothing suited to working behind the bar—worn jeans, dark shirts, heavy boots, and occasionally an old leather vest or jacket from his biker years.
- Behind the Bar: His sleeves are often rolled up while he works, and he carries himself with the ease of a man who knows every bottle, loose floorboard, and hidden weapon inside Helix.
- Off Duty: Malone is significantly less formidable early in the morning, particularly when wearing a robe, one slipper, and the expression of a man who has awakened to discover Femi left before telling him where she was going.
Relationship with Femi
Malone’s relationship with Femi is built on unconditional shelter.
When she first arrives at Helix, he does not demand her history. He understands that she cannot speak, but he never treats her silence as stupidity. He gives her time, work, food, and a lock on a door no one will open without permission.
Femi responds in the only way she knows how. She makes herself useful.
She cleans the clubhouse, remembers customer orders, cooks for him, and quietly becomes essential to the daily life of Helix. Malone recognizes that her relentless usefulness is partially rooted in fear—the belief that shelter must continually be earned—but he never makes her explain it. Instead, he reinforces through repetition that the room remains hers.
Their affection is rarely spoken.
It exists in meals left warm, supplies purchased without discussion, arguments conducted entirely through facial expressions, and Malone’s immediate outrage whenever she takes a risk. He wants to protect her from everything, sometimes so fiercely that he must be reminded she is an adult capable of protecting herself.
His growth lies in learning that fatherhood does not grant ownership.
Femi needs a place she can return to, not another person deciding where she is permitted to go.
Relationship with Daemon
Malone and Daemon share a history rooted in their younger years and their mutual connection to Iris. There is familiarity between them that neither fully explains. Malone is one of the few people willing to tease, challenge, or openly criticize Daemon without fearing the consequences.
He trusts Daemon’s capacity to protect Femi, though that trust does not prevent him from watching the relationship carefully. Malone knows what Daemon is capable of. He also sees the restraint Daemon exercises around her and understands that this matters more than promises.
Their friendship is expressed through arguments, whiskey, and insults neither man takes seriously.
Malone recognizes Daemon’s love for Femi before Daemon is ready to name it. He watches the feared man become helpless beneath a kiss on the cheek, guards the silver ring Femi places over Daemon’s heart with suspiciously bright eyes, and takes great pleasure in announcing the obvious:
“She broke you.”
Beneath the humor is gratitude. Malone gave Femi shelter, but he could not give her every kind of safety she needed. Daemon’s presence helps her step beyond mere survival.
Malone does not surrender his place in her life when Daemon arrives.
He simply makes room beside him.
Central Contradiction
Malone presents himself as a hard man who expects nothing and needs no one. In truth, Helix exists because he has spent his life collecting people who require somewhere to belong.
He complains while feeding them.
Insults them while protecting them.
Threatens them while ensuring they return safely.
Malone believes he gave Femi only a room because admitting he gave her a home would expose how much of his heart now lives inside it.
But the greater truth is one he understands even less:
Femi gave him a family.
Malone could not save Iris.
He cannot undo the years Femi spent alone.
He cannot silence every nightmare or destroy every memory that follows her into the dark.
What he can do is keep the kitchen stocked, the bedroom door untouched, and the lights of Helix burning until she returns.
For Malone, love is not a declaration.
It is leaving the door unlocked for family—and standing behind it with a shotgun for everyone else.
