Torii

Torii of Sehil was born into war and raised inside its echo.

A wolf yokai, a little over four centuries old, he carries time the way mountains carry snow—quietly, without complaint. His kingdom, Sehil, is not a single people but a tense balance of humans and yokai. That balance is not accidental. It is engineered, defended, and sometimes enforced. Torii understands that coexistence is not soft. It is negotiated daily, often with teeth bared beneath diplomacy.

He did not expect to wear the crown.

After his father’s death, the throne passed over his older cousin and settled on him instead. Inheritance among yokai is rarely sentimental. Strength, loyalty, political necessity—these shape succession more than blood order. The decision was not gentle, and it was not universally welcomed. Torii learned quickly that ruling a mixed kingdom means proving yourself twice: once to your enemies, and once to your own.

He stands well over six feet, broad-shouldered, built like something meant for the front lines rather than a throne. Long black hair falls down his back, framing wolf ears that never quite stop listening. His golden eyes are not warm in the way Toki’s are sharp—they are predatory. Assessing. Calculating distance. Measuring threat.

Sehil’s enemies have learned his name the hard way.

He has been painted in the blood of those who challenged his borders. Not metaphorically. Literally. There are sagas sung in low halls about the battles where Torii did not retreat, where the wolf in him stepped forward instead of the king. Four hundred years harden a creature. They also refine it. He does not rage blindly. He hunts with intention.

And then he met Toki.

A woman barely into her twenties, small beside him, white-haired, golden-eyed, carrying her own history like a blade hidden in silk. He has faced warlords older than she is. He has buried rivals who thought themselves immortal. Yet when he ran into her, he was blindsided.

Love, for a creature like Torii, is not a fluttering softness. It is a territorial instinct colliding with reverence. It is the wolf recognizing something that cannot be subdued.

He did not fall because she was fragile.

He fell because she was not.

The warrior king who commands a kingdom of mixed blood found himself undone by a queen who once defeated her own father. In her, he did not see conquest. He saw equal gravity. Equal fire.

For the first time in centuries, Torii was not calculating how to win.

He was calculating how not to lose her.
