The Yokai of Idera

The Living Echoes of Creation

“When the gods exhaled, the air remembered—and from that remembrance, the Yokai were born.”
— From the First Chant of Breath and Stone

Among all Idera’s creatures—avian, terrestrial, aquatic, and celestial—none stand apart like the Yokai. They are not a race but a resonance: the living manifestation of elemental will. Each Yokai is a syllable in the language of creation, a thought spoken by the planet itself.

Their bodies may resemble beasts, mortals, or spirits, but they are neither wholly animal nor divine. They are consciousness wrapped in essence—breath and element combined.

Yokai may appear in forms ranging from simple sentient creatures—foxes that commune through telepathy, serpents of crystal water—to complex, Terian-like beings indistinguishable from mortals until their sigils awaken.

True Yokai cannot conceal the markings that define them. Sigils—etched in flowing, luminous lines from neck to ankle, down both arms—pulse in rhythm with their essence. These are not tattoos, but conduits of divine current, proof that the Yokai body is a vessel of magic.

When calm, the sigils shimmer faintly. When angered, aroused, or invoking power, they blaze like constellations.

Even those in full humanoid guise bear hints of their origin: elongated, animalistic ears; slitted or ringed pupils; and an aura that hums with unnatural stillness.

True Yokai
Elemental in origin and power, the True Yokai embody the living tones of Idera’s Pillars. They retain awareness of their animal and human forms, moving between them like breath between words. Many are immortal, but not ageless—they grow wiser, more dangerous, and more intricate with time.

Halflyings
Born of union between Yokai and Terian, Halflyings possess mortal flesh yet inherit Yokai endurance, strength, and heightened perception. They bear no sigils—their essence hidden within blood rather than displayed upon skin.

Halflyings are often torn between worlds: too powerful for mortal ranks, yet too fragile for divine communion. Still, they are living bridges between races. Many royal or ancient bloodlines whisper of Yokai ancestry long diluted by centuries of silence.

“When a Halflying draws breath, two worlds tremble to listen.” — Scholar Orien of Celcus

✧ Elemental Kin and Classification ✧

Scholars of Celcus divide Yokai by Essence Alignment, each corresponding to one of the Pillars of Creation.

Elemental AlignmentNatureExamples
Stone-BoundEnduring, oath-bound, and grounded; defenders of mountains and memory.Varuun – the Breath-Bound Hunters
Tide-BoundMutable, fluid, and ancient; lords of currents and living reefs.Levo – the Last Arakai of the Teyraga Line
Sky-BornWinged spirits of wind and light; messengers of storm and sun.Unnamed – the Feathered Whisperers of Earia
Root-TouchedVerdant souls tied to the Stone Mother’s pulse; healers and deceivers alike.Flora-bound Yokai of Verdure
Solar and Lunar AscendedRare hybrids infused directly by celestial bodies; divine emissaries of radiance and memory.Priest-Kin of the Twin Moons

✧ Essence and Visibility ✧

During celestial events—particularly the Blood Eclipse—the sigils of every Yokai blaze in unison, visible across the continents like veins of living light. It is said this is Idera’s heartbeat made visible, a reminder that the planet dreams through its children.

✧ Archivist’s Note ✧

“Terians shape cities; Yokai shape memory. They are the living breath between history and myth.”
— Archivist Theseus of Celcus, The Ideran Lexicon, Vol. IV

✧ Illuminated Taxonomy ✧

  • Stone (North) — Varuun — Breath-Bound Wolf-Kin
  • Sky (East) — Unnamed Wind Yokai — Messengers of Storm
  • Root (South) — Verdant Spirits — Green-Blooded Healers
  • Wave (West) — Levo of Teyraga — Tide-Fanged Sovereign
  • Balance (Hidden) — Unknown Fifth Kind — Said to dwell beyond ley and law

The Living Echoes of Creation

The Yokai are not merely creatures; they are the breath of the Pillars given form—elemental consciousness molded into flesh, fur, or flame. While Idera teems with mortal beasts and Terian races, none possess the raw resonance of the Yokai.

Each Yokai is a living syllable in the world’s divine language—one that nature never stopped speaking.

✧ Nature and Diversity ✧

There are millions of Yokai species across Idera. Their variety rivals that of Terian skin and culture. Some take simple, beastlike forms—a fox with telepathic thought, a serpent of living glass, a raven who steals voices instead of sound. Others mirror mortals so closely they could walk among Terians unnoticed—until their sigils awaken.

True Yokai cannot suppress the glowing sigils that mark their flesh. These sacred lines—etched from neck to ankle, flowing down both arms—are living conduits of essence, pulsing with the elemental tone of their birth. Each Yokai’s sigil pattern is unique, a soul-map revealing lineage and power.

“A Yokai’s sigils are not tattoos—they are truth made visible.” — Archivist Theseus of Celcus

✧ True Yokai vs. Halflying ✧

True Yokai
Appear in either animal or humanoid form, often shifting between the two with ease. In humanoid guise, they bear pointed or animal-like ears, elongated pupils, and a presence that unsettles mortals—too calm, too still, or too aware. Their essence hums audibly in silence, the way wind sings before a storm.

Halflyings
The offspring of Yokai and Terian unions. They lack visible sigils but inherit Yokai strength, longevity, and sensory depth. They bleed slower, heal faster, and sense essence the way others sense light. Yet their dual heritage often leaves them spiritually divided—belonging to both worlds and neither.

Halflyings are viewed with a mix of reverence and unease; to some Terians, they are living bridges, proof that divine blood can be tamed. To others, they are dangerous echoes of a power that should remain unbound.

✧ Hierarchy of Essence ✧

Yokai are often classified by Elemental Purity, tied to one of the Pillars of Creation:

  • Stone-Bound Yokai: Grounded, immense, resilient (e.g., Varuun).
  • Sky-Born Yokai: Winged spirits of wind and storm.
  • Root-Touched Yokai: Nature entities born from forests, flora, and decay.
  • Tide-Bound Yokai: Oceanic or amphibious (e.g., Levo of the Teyraga Line).
  • Lunar or Solar Ascended: Those blessed—or cursed—by divine resonance with the moons or the sun.

✧ On Sight and Soul ✧

A Yokai’s sigils glow brightest when their essence surges: during combat, mating, or oath-binding. Ancient texts claim that during the Blood Eclipse, when both moons vanish, the sigils of all Yokai pulse in unison—the planet’s soul beating through its children.

✧ Scholar’s Note ✧

“If Terian kind are heirs to civilization, the Yokai are heirs to memory. They are not the past—they are the proof it still breathes.”
— High Scribe Orien of Celcus

Bestiary of Idera: Southern Compendium.

Common Name: Tidal Lizard Yokai
Proper Name: Arakai Teyraga — “The Fanged Currents”
Elder Survivor: Levo, the Last Fang of the Deep
Classification: Yokai / Elemental (Water)
Region: Southern Seas of Elyndra

✧ Description ✧

The Arakai of the Teyraga Line are colossal amphibious yokai whose forms embody the sea’s shifting temperament—scaled leviathans of tidal strength and reflective calm. Their skin shimmers between hues of sapphire and salt-gray, resembling the underbelly of stormclouds. The crest along their spine glows faintly when near ley-currents, responding to the moon’s twin tides.

They breathe both air and water, their lungs adapted to pressure shifts that would crush mortal vessels. In stillness, they resemble drowned statues. When roused, the sea bends around them.

✧ Origins & Mythology ✧

Born in the Age of the Pillars, the Arakai were forged from the Solar Father’s molten tears, cooled by the Stone Mother’s touch beneath the first waves. The Teyraga Line—the purest of their kin—were tasked with maintaining the balance of oceanic mana across Elyndra.

When the Leviathan Pact was sealed, the Arakai withdrew into the deep trenches, their songs turning into silence. It is said the waves still carry fragments of their hymns, decipherable only through Kith-Tongue echoes.

“Their breath was the tide’s beginning; their silence, its retreat.” — Fragment from the Southern Tablets

✧ Abilities ✧

  • Tidal Resonance: The Arakai can manipulate water through pulse-vibrations in their chest cavity, generating tides or calming storms.
  • Ley Conduction: Their scales act as conduits for raw mana; the Teyraga were once worshiped as living altars of the southern seas.
  • Memory of Salt: Through their saliva—called Elys Brine—they can recall ancestral memories, often used by oracles in prophetic rites.
  • Dream-Sleep: Once every thousand years, an Arakai enters a dormancy where its body petrifies into coral, becoming indistinguishable from reefstone.

✧ The Last of His Kind ✧

Levo, Lord of the Tides, is the final known Arakai. He dwells within the Pearl Trench—a submerged cathedral of bioluminescent coral said to have formed around his resting body. His breath stirs the currents of Elyndra, his dreams shaping the southern storms.

Those who approach his sanctum unbidden find themselves dragged into repeating currents—caught in what sailors call the Sea’s Memory.

“When Levo wakes, the sea remembers every sin.” — Southern Proverb

✧ Relations & Legacy ✧

  • Allies: Once bound by oath to the House of Sea; honored by the Stone Mother’s priests for keeping the world’s balance.
  • Rivals: The Leviathan—whose pact fractured the old ocean’s harmony.
  • Worshippers: Tide-singers and shamanic orders who practice the Rite of the Pearl Breath, invoking Levo’s name for calm waters.

Even now, the word Teyraga is used in southern blessings:

“May your path remember its tide.”

✧ Symbolic Alignment ✧

Pillar: Verdure (South)
Element: Water / Memory
Essence: Black and Verdant, braided
Glyph: Coiled tide wrapped around a crescent fang

Bestiary of Idera: Western Compendium.

Common Name: Wolf-kin / Moon-Bound Yokai
Proper Name: Varuun — “The Breath-Bound Hunter”
Classification: Yokai / Lunar-Spirit Hybrid
Region: Western Ranges of Idera, near the high plateaus of the Pillar of Stone

✧ Description ✧

The Varuun are wolf-formed yokai, embodiments of lunar breath given physical form. Their coats shift in tone with the twin moons Pathao and Earia—ashen silver beneath full light, obsidian during the waning. The markings along their flanks resemble carved runes that glow faintly when they howl, releasing vibrations that can move through stone and bone alike.

They are both hunters and keepers: predatory by design, but bound by a strict spiritual code rooted in oath and silence.

✧ Origins & Mythology ✧

The Varuun were said to arise when the Lunar Father first exhaled upon the newborn mountains. From that sacred breath, life found its voice—feral, loyal, and sharp. The first Varuun pack was bound to guard the Pillar of Stone’s slumber, ensuring no oath nor god would fracture its foundation.

Over centuries, their blood mingled with mortal lines, giving rise to hybrid offspring known as Stone-Born Varuun, mortals whose eyes still shimmer with lunar memory. Medea, the mother of King Daichi, was one such being—a half-Varuun who carried the pulse of the mountain in her blood and the calm of moonlight in her gaze.

“Her silence was the howl the gods feared most.” — Fragment, The Pillar Hymns of the West

✧ Abilities ✧

  • Breath of Stone: The Varuun can exhale a sonic pulse that fractures rock or stills seismic motion, calming the restless land.
  • Echo-Howl: Their howls resonate through ley veins, communicating across vast distances or summoning ancestral memory.
  • Lunar Phasing: Under certain alignments of Pathao and Earia, they can shift between flesh and shadow, walking unseen between moments.
  • Oath-Scent: They can taste deception through vibration, sensing lies as changes in resonance rather than sound.

✧ The Varuun Clans of the West ✧

The western Varuun once maintained packs known as Echo-Clans, each devoted to a specific rhythm of the moons. Over time, mortal wars and divine silence scattered them. Now only fragments remain:

  • The White Spire Line: Scholars and oath-keepers; Medea’s bloodline descends from this ancient pack.
  • The Flint-Fang Clans: Mountain sentinels and war-scouts who defended the northern borders.
  • The Hollow Steppe Strays: Wandering seers said to walk between dreams and stone.

Their language, the Kith-Tongue, is still used in certain western rites—particularly in oaths of loyalty and burial chants.

✧ Cultural Role ✧

To the western kingdoms, Varuun became synonymous with constancy. Their likeness is carved above mountain gates and palace arches to signify endurance and truth. Warriors invoke their name before battle; rulers invoke it when swearing unbreakable pacts.

In common folklore, a Varuun howl is said to call the dead to rest—or to rise if the living have broken sacred vows.

“Where a Varuun stands, the mountain breathes.” — Proverb of the Western Court

✧ Symbolic Alignment ✧

Pillar: Stone (North)
Element: Earth / Spirit
Essence: Black and White intertwined
Glyph: Two interlocking crescents forming a breath-spiral of fangs and stone veins

✧ Relations & Legacy ✧

  • Allies: Stone Mother’s acolytes and the old western priesthoods.
  • Rivals: Serpent-blooded Yokai of the southern marshes—ancient enemies since the First Hunt.
  • Ancestral Lines: The royal lineage through Medea connects Daichi to the Varuun—his command of silence, his temper, and his loyalty all echoes of that sacred beast.

✧ Addendum from Archivist Theseus of Celcus ✧

“The Varuun are not beasts of the moon—they are its breath remembering the body it once had. Medea’s blood was proof: even gods may whisper through mortal veins.”

Bestiary of Idera: Eastern Compendium

Common Name: Fire Birds of the Eastern Forests
Proper Name: Pyraeli — “Those Who Burn Without Consuming”
Classification: Yokai / Sky-Born Elemental (Fire-Air Hybrid)
Region: The Emberwood Forests of the Eastern Lands

✧ Description ✧

The Pyraeli are radiant avian Yokai whose feathers shimmer like molten glass. In flight, their wings shed sparks that cool into drifting motes of starlight, leaving auroral trails through the forest canopy. When resting, their bodies dim to a deep ember-red, blending into the smoldering bark of their trees.

They are neither phoenixes nor mundane birds; they are the flame given song, the voice of the sun whispering through the leaves.

✧ Habitat ✧

The Pyraeli dwell in the Emberwood, a vast forest perpetually cloaked in mist and ash. Its trees possess sap that burns cold, allowing the Pyraeli to nest within flaming hollows without harm. Only during the Solar Solstice do they migrate skyward, forming luminous swarms that ignite the dawn over the eastern horizon.

✧ Origins & Mythology ✧

Legend tells that the Pyraeli were born from the Solar Father’s laughter, when his joy at creation struck the clouds and kindled them into life. Their purpose: to bear his light where the sun cannot reach—beneath canopy, cavern, and heart.

Old hymns call them The Living Sparks, attendants of the eastern priests who maintain the Flame Edicts. It is said that when a Pyraeli dies, its body cools into a feather of pure gold, still warm for seven days.

“When one Pyraeli falls, ten dawns remember.” — Eastern proverb

✧ Abilities ✧

  • Solar Resonance: Radiate light that purifies blight or shadowed essence.
  • Ignisong: Their cry carries fire; sound alone can ignite air or weave protective barriers.
  • Ash Rebirth: A Pyraeli consumed by its own flame is reborn within the ashes of its nest.
  • Forest Pact: They share symbiosis with Emberwood flora, feeding on excess mana released by the trees’ burning sap.

✧ Cultural Role ✧

The Pyraeli are revered as messengers of renewal. Priests of the Pillar of Dawn keep carved effigies of their wings over temple hearths, believing their presence prevents divine silence.

To common folk, seeing a Pyraeli feather drifting through smoke is a sign that forgiveness has been granted.

✧ Symbolic Alignment ✧

Pillar: Dawn (East)
Element: Fire / Air
Essence: White and Red intertwined
Glyph: A flame-shaped feather encircled by a rising sun

✧ Relations & Legacy ✧

  • Allies: Solar Father’s clergy and the Emberwood guardians.
  • Rivals: Shadow-winged carrion Yokai of the northern cliffs.
  • Connection: Their light guides Sky-Born Yokai during the Flight of Sol, the yearly pilgrimage of winged spirits toward the eastern sea.

✧ Marginal Note from Archivist Theseus ✧

“They burn, yet the forest endures. Perhaps divinity is not destruction, but brilliance that teaches restraint.”

Beatiary of Idera: Southern Compendium

Common Name: Root-Touched Yokai
Proper Name: Sylvaen — “The Breath Beneath the Leaf”
Classification: Yokai / Elemental (Earth-Life Hybrid)
Region: Southern Forests of Verdure, near the Pillar’s Grove

✧ Description ✧

The Sylvaen are beings of living plant and spirit—neither fully flesh nor flora. Their bodies resemble Terian or Yokai forms grown from bark, vine, and petal; veins shimmer with green-gold sap that pulses like blood. When still, they are indistinguishable from the forest itself; when roused, their eyes ignite with chlorophic light and the air fills with the scent of rain-touched soil.

They speak through rustle and rhythm rather than voice, their words layered with the sighs of leaves.

✧ Origins & Mythology ✧

The Stone Mother is said to have breathed into the roots of the first forest, giving it mind and memory. From that awakening rose the Sylvaen—spirits tasked with keeping life’s balance between growth and decay.

Every Sylvaen carries a fragment of that first breath. When they die, their bodies dissolve into spores that seek new roots to inhabit, ensuring their memory never truly ends.

“They do not live as mortals live. They grow, and in their growing, remember.” — Fragment of the Root Hymns

✧ Abilities ✧

  • Verdant Healing: Can mend wounds by transferring their own essence, at cost of vitality.
  • Root-Song: Manipulate flora through harmonic vibration; forests move where they walk.
  • Spore-Veil: Release hallucinogenic pollen used for both healing trances and deception.
  • Rebirth Cycle: Upon death, their essence reincarnates through a chosen seed or sprout.

✧ Temperament ✧

The Sylvaen are dual in nature—healers when revered, deceivers when wronged. They are known to aid travelers lost in their woods, yet punish greed by luring the wicked deeper until the forest reclaims them. Some claim their compassion is merely camouflage for their hunger to feed the soil.

“Every mercy hides a root; every root hides a hunger.” — Celcus Field Notes

✧ Cultural Role ✧

The southern people regard the Sylvaen as emissaries of the Stone Mother’s will. Priests seeking the Verdure’s favor enter the Grove of Echoing Petals, where the Sylvaen test the truth of one’s heart through illusion.

In ritual, they are invoked at funerals and harvests—symbolizing both the gift and the price of renewal.

✧ Symbolic Alignment ✧

Pillar: Verdure (South)
Element: Earth / Life
Essence: Green and Black intertwined
Glyph: Interwoven spiral of leaf and bone forming an endless knot

✧ Relations & Legacy ✧

  • Allies: Stone Mother’s Daughters (root-bound priestesses) and Verdant spirits of the southern wetlands.
  • Rivals: Fire-borne Yokai who scorch the sacred groves.
  • Known Hybrids: Sapblood Halflyings—rare offspring of Sylvaen and Terian—who retain the gift of healing but no sigils.

✧ Marginal Note from Archivist Theseus ✧

“The Sylvaen teach the oldest lesson of Idera: to heal is to harm wisely.”

Sky-Temples

Common Name: Solar and Lunar Ascended
Proper Name: The Aurelian and the Selunari
Classification: Yokai / Celestial Hybrid (Light–Memory Axis)
Region: Across the Eastern and Western Sky-Temples; occasionally among noble Terian bloodlines

✧ Description ✧

The Ascended are radiant Yokai touched directly by the celestial bodies themselves—infused not by the breath of a Pillar, but by the eternal fire of the Solar Father and the reflective silence of the Lunar Father.

They appear near-human at first glance, yet their skin carries an inner luminescence: gold-veined in the Aurelian (solar) and silver-toned in the Selunari (lunar). Their eyes bear no pupil, only shifting disks of sun or moonlight. True Ascended have no sigils—light itself is their mark.

They do not age as mortals do; their radiance grows brighter until their bodies dissolve into light entirely, leaving behind a single feather-shaped shard of crystallized essence called an Ecliptine.

✧ Origins & Mythology ✧

During the Age of Radiance, when both moons first crossed before the dawn, two sparks fell from the heavens and struck the mortal plane. From those twin embers rose the first Ascended—Solarex and Lyraen, siblings of light and reflection.

The Solar line, or Aurelian, became emissaries of courage and creation; the Lunar line, or Selunari, keepers of memory and truth. Together they sustained the balance between divine intent and mortal will—until the eclipse of betrayal, when one line turned from the other.

“The sun teaches us to act; the moon teaches us to remember.” — Fragment of the Twin Hymns

✧ Abilities ✧

  • Radiant Mantle: The Aurelian can emit blinding light capable of burning shadow Yokai or purifying corrupted essence.
  • Echo of Stillness: The Selunari may halt the flow of mana in their vicinity, freezing spells or quelling storms.
  • Ecliptic Fusion: When both Solar and Lunar essence are harmonized, the Ascended can open a rift of pure equilibrium—said to heal lands or annihilate them entirely.
  • Memory of Light: They retain the recollections of past lives through luminous dreams, allowing them to speak in the voices of the dead.

✧ Nature and Temperament ✧

The Ascended embody duality—creation and remembrance, impulse and restraint. Most live as priests or wanderers, avoiding power unless summoned by divine accord. The Solar tend toward passion and leadership; the Lunar toward solitude and contemplation.

When united, their resonance forms a perfect harmonic known as the Ecliptic Chord, a phenomenon said to calm even the gods.

✧ Cultural Role ✧

The Ascended are worshiped and feared in equal measure. The twin temples of East and West each claim descent from their blessing:

  • The Dawn Basilica (East) honors the Solar line as divine artisans.
  • The Mirror Hall (West) guards the Lunar relics, preserving memory and dream.

In ancient wars, their intervention often marked the end of entire ages; hence their epithet among mortals: “Those Who Conclude.”

“When the Ascended walk, history chooses sides.” — High Priestess Chione

✧ Symbolic Alignment ✧

Pillars: Dawn (East) and Dusk (West)
Element: Fire / Light / Memory
Essence: White and Gold (Aurelian); Silver and Blue (Selunari)
Glyph: Interlocking sunburst and crescent forming a single eye

✧ Relations & Legacy ✧

  • Allies: Priests of the Twin Moons; Pyraeli of the East, who serve as their messengers.
  • Rivals: Shadow Yokai born of the Void.
  • Known Hybrids: Ecliptines — offspring of Solar and Lunar essence who can walk between day and night without casting a shadow.

✧ Marginal Note from Archivist Theseus ✧

“Light has two faces: the one that blinds, and the one that remembers. The Ascended are both—sun and echo, creation and consequence.”
