Maru

Maru

The Little Anchor.

Some people change the world through power.

Maru changes it through love.

A young human hatchling adopted by Vu and fiercely cherished by both Vu and Nagafusa, Maru occupies a place in their lives that no title, army, or relic could ever replace. Though small in stature, her influence reaches farther than many rulers ever manage.

Bright, perceptive, and emotionally intelligent beyond her years, Maru possesses a rare gift: she notices what others overlook. A trembling hand. A tired smile. The difference between someone saying they are fine and someone actually meaning it.

Perhaps because of this, she became one of the few people capable of reaching Vu when the weight of relics, ley lines, and divinity threatened to overwhelm her.

Maru is unusually sensitive to dreams, magic, and the spaces between worlds. She often recognizes shifts in the unseen before seasoned priests and scholars realize something has changed. While she lacks the overwhelming power possessed by gods and yokai, she possesses something far rarer:

The ability to remain herself in their presence.

During the confrontation with Moira, when the void sought to pull Vu beyond the reach of mortal understanding, it was Maru who helped anchor her. Not through strength. Not through magic.

Through connection.

Through memory.

Through love.

To Maru, Vu is not a relic-bearer, a sovereign, or a living miracle.

Vu is her mother.

And in every way that matters, Vu feels the same.

Nagafusa’s relationship with Maru is equally fierce. Though feared throughout the East as a serpent sovereign capable of terrible things, Maru has never viewed him as a monster. To her, he is family. The distinction matters more than most realize.

Within the palace, servants and soldiers alike learned quickly that there are very few things capable of frightening Nagafusa.

Anything threatening Maru is one of them.

Among the people of Sōgetsu, stories are told of kings, yokai, and miracles.

Yet some of the oldest palace staff quietly tell a different tale:

That the most powerful person in the kingdom is not the serpent king.

Not the relic bearer.

Not the gods watching from beyond the veil.

But the little girl who can make them all stop what they are doing simply by saying:

“Mom?”
