Lorelei-the Jewel of Souls

SEALED ENTRY — THE JEWEL OF SOULS

CLASSIFICATION: SACRED RELIC / LIVING VESSEL / PROHIBITED KNOWLEDGE

Lorelei — The First Guardian

“She died once to save the world.
Then refused to leave it unguarded.”

Among the oldest surviving fragments of yokai and miko scripture, one name appears again and again beneath damaged ink and burned parchment.

Lorelei.

Not goddess.
Not queen.
Not saint.

Though many later civilizations mistook her for all three.

Lorelei was the first sacrifice willingly given to create what would become known as the Jewel of Souls.

Ancient records conflict on her exact nature. Some describe her as a primordial yokai whose form eclipsed mountains. Others claim she was born before modern yokai bloodlines stabilized, making her something older and less understood. Surviving dragon tablets refer to her only as:

“The One Who Remained.”

The First Catastrophe

Before the formation of the modern territories, an unnamed calamity nearly erased both humanity and yokai alike. Records surrounding the entity are fragmented intentionally, suggesting early councils attempted to remove all surviving mention of it.

Only one detail remains consistent:

It could not be defeated through force alone.

Eight souls chose sacrifice instead.

Four miko.
Four yokai.

Among them was Lorelei.

A powerful holy woman used those willingly surrendered souls to forge a reliquary capable of sealing the catastrophe beyond mortal reach. That reliquary became the Jewel of Souls.

The ritual succeeded.

But the cost was irreversible.

The eight souls did not pass onward.

They remained.

Watching. Sleeping. Waiting within the Jewel across the ages.

The Nature of Lorelei

Unlike the others, Lorelei did not fully dissolve into the Jewel’s spiritual weave.

Something endured.

Not fully soul.
Not fully memory.

Presence.

Ancient shrine records describe encounters with the Jewel as accompanied by:

  • A sensation of being watched
  • Sudden silence in sacred spaces
  • Shadows moving independently of flame
  • An overwhelming instinct to kneel

Miko scholars later theorized Lorelei became the Jewel’s “remaining will” — the consciousness responsible for protecting both the relic and its chosen guardian.

Modern yokai texts disagree.

The oldest Inu legends describe her more bluntly:

“A predator guarding the sacred dead.”

The Arnh Bloodline Prophecy

The Arnh bloodline preserved the prophecy longest:

“One born of fractured blood shall inherit the Jewel of Souls.”

The Arnh family believed this prophecy represented salvation.

They were catastrophically wrong.

For generations, the Arnh Line attempted to suppress their yokai-tainted ancestry through ritual sacrifice, offering female members of the bloodline to halt spiritual corruption.

These rites temporarily delayed transformation.

But once the Jewel awakened inside Luna Sano, the rituals ceased functioning entirely.

Because Luna does not merely carry the Jewel.

She is becoming its living vessel.

The Awakening of Lorelei

At eight years old, Luna Sano suffered catastrophic spiritual collapse and near death.

The Jewel fractured open inside her soul.

Several yokai souls within the reliquary bound themselves to Luna in order to preserve her life:

  • Sanura — Kitsune soul fragment
  • Mimi — Inu soul fragment
  • Lorelei — Remaining primordial guardian

Unlike the others, Lorelei did not intend temporary stabilization.

She anchored herself permanently to Luna’s soul.

According to direct witness testimony from Tyr Moon:

“We could not leave our guardian unprotected.
We will not let her break.”

Observed Manifestations

When Lorelei surfaces through Luna Sano, witnesses consistently report:

  • Sudden atmospheric pressure changes
  • Heightened fear responses in elder yokai
  • Deepening environmental shadows
  • Voice-pattern shifts inconsistent with Luna’s normal cadence
  • Extreme emotional suppression
  • Unnatural stillness

Notably, the entity displays protective—not hostile—behavior toward Luna and those recognized as bonded to her.

Particularly:

  • Tyr Moon
  • Foster
  • Ryuu
  • Lord Fei
  • Rin

Threats directed toward Luna produce immediate behavioral escalation.

Final Archivist Note

The greatest misunderstanding surrounding Lorelei is the belief that she possesses Luna Sano.

This is inaccurate.

Lorelei does not seek control.

She seeks preservation.

She is not haunting the guardian of the Jewel.

She is standing watch beside her.

And according to surviving prophecy fragments—

she will continue to do so until either:

  • the Jewel is destroyed,
  • the guardian dies,
  • or the world once again requires sacrifice.

“The world remembers the Jewel.
It forgot the creature still guarding it.”
— Archivist Theseus of Celcus
